Kathleen Matheson Head Coach (775-315-7701)

Coach Kat officially started her coaching career in the Pacific Northwest. While in Washington she coached synchronized swimming and competitive swimming at both Assistant and Head Coach levels for 12 years. She has taken synchronized swimmers to National Championships and competitive swimmers to the Jr National Championships. Coach Kat has been selected to coach competitive swimmers at LSC All Stars, Pacific Coast All Stars, Western Zone Championships, and North American Challenge Cup meets.

When Coach Kat moved to Carson Valley in 2006, she was hired as the Head Coach for the Carson Valley Masters Swim Team and was the Dolfins substitute Head Coach for a month.  She joined the team as an Assistant Coach in January 2007 and became the Head Coach in 2009 and continues in this position.

Kat likes practices to be disciplined and fun! This comes from two of her past occupations; 10 years in the United States Air Force, and 10 years as a preschool teacher in Washington State. She started competing in swimming at the age of 5 and has been involved in the sport ever since.

Jennifer Stevenson Assistant Coach

Coach Jennifer moved to South Lake Tahoe when she was 4 years old. She grew up in Tahoe and began swimming for Tahoe Swim Club when she was 10. She swam with the team for 5 years until she discovered her love for cross-country running. She began running in 7th grade and continued through her junior year at South Tahoe High. In 1990 she was #1 in the state of Nevada and ranked #6 in the nation at the 2-mile run.

Coach Jennifer married her awesome husband in 2001 who she’s known since she was 4 years old. They moved to Gardnerville in 2001 and have 3 kids who are all Dolfin swimmers or swammers(2 are graduated). Coach Jennifer has been a coach for DDST since 2017. She loves working with kids and loves being a coach for the Douglas Dolfins!!

Gerald Koch Assistant Coach

I began my coaching career in Colorado at Arapahoe Country Club at the ripe old age of 18. A few years later after some education I joined the Aurora swim team as a summer assistant. Then back to school where I swam and played football.

Soon after I relocated to California. Where I coached a YMCA team. My only swimmer got a DQ in the 400IM, my diver was 6th.

Moving along I finally moved to De Anza Swim Club. I coached on an outstanding staff. After a very successful 1976 Olympics I was selected to Coach the Taiwan National Team. This was an adventure. The Taiwan Swim Committee staged a fantastic wedding for me and my wife Janet 44 years later still going strong. An interesting side note neither of us speak Chinese.

On our return I founded Fairbrae Swim Club. We went from a country club summer team a solid Pacific Swimming team. Several swimmers were High School All Americans and were awarded college swim scholarships. We then merged with DACA. The De Anza/DACA club produced multiple Olympians. An several GOLD medals.

An Interesting note during most of my coaching career I was a full-time employee of several major bay area companies (Lockheed, National Semiconductor, Tandem Computers) We also added two son’s to our family. Yes, they were swimmers.

I was the swim school director for DACA we taught 3500 lessons per week. In addition to my coaching duties at DACA I coached the De Anza College Men’s and Women’s swim and dive teams. Interestingly one of the divers won the 1- and 3-meter diving championships at the California State Community Championships. Not that the swimmers didn’t perform well.

I was the developer of an aquatics and exercise program for seniors at Foothill College. Covid came we left and here we are in Nevada.
